Players’ Court Positions

Netball is one of only a few sports in which a players’ position determines where on the playing arena he is allowed to be active. In order to facilitate the understanding of this area of the rules, we have produced a descriptive table and an interactive diagram, both of which clearly show the areas of court accessible by the different positions.

Table detailing the permitted playing areas for the different position

Position Abbreviation Permitted Playing Area Opposing Player
Goal Shooter GS Attacking third of the court, including the shooting circle Goal Keeper
Goal Attack GA Center and attacking thirds, including the shooting circle Goal Defense
Wing Attack WA Center and attacking thirds, but not the shooting circle Wing Defense
Center C Everwhere except shooting circles Center
Wing Defense WD Center and defensive thirds, but not the shooting circle Wing Attack
Goal Defense GD Center and defensive thirds, including the shooting circle Goal Attack
Goal Keeper GK Defensive third of the court, including the shooting circle Goal Shooter

Click on a position to show its permitted areas (red) on the court (team attacks to the right)

  • GA

I think this is a very good website but i think that on the picture of a netball pitch where you can click to see where they players can go, you could just do lots of little pictures that can’t move. Apart from that you have supplied me very well with information and i will definatly use your site again.

Reply to anonymous. It’s called offside.
Reply to Rahlei. You should use the pivot technique as it’s better and your passes are less likey to be intercepted.

Great site! I’m hoping to become a good GD someday.
